    Summary

During the COVID-19 pandemic, the link between science and medicine was brought back into the public eye, in particular by the presence of many physicians in the public arena to talk about medical research and science in general. However, if the link between medicine and science may seem obvious, research and publication activities only concern a minority of physicians with very specific backgrounds, and cannot therefore be considered a ''normal'' aspect of the medical profession. In France, this scientific dimension of the medical profession is strongly, if not exclusively, associated with university hospital careers, considered the most prestigious segment of the profession, combining the authority of not only medicine, but also science. And yet, despite the predominant place of medical research in the scientific research ecosystem, few studies have focused on the scientific dimension of medical careers in general, and university hospital careers in particular. Based mainly on biographical interviews, the aim of this thesis will be to examine the scientific careers of university-hospital doctors and the issues of scientific recognition linked to medical and hospital activity. Particular attention will therefore be focused on the processes of scientific socialization encountered by physicians during their studies and in their professional practice, on the development and specific characteristics of university hospital careers, on the articulation between two professional identities whose goals are not necessarily the same, and on the scientific reputational arenas mobilized by physicians to build their careers.
