Funding opportunities

Dernière mise à jour :

Whether you'd like to come to do your PhD at the University of Bordeaux, or simply come for a research visit, you will need to plan in advance how you are going to fund your PhD or your visit.

PhD funding is an important aspect to take into account at the outset. The dissertation topics on offer may include funding (partial or total), but if not, it may be up to you to find funding.

Some doctoral schools require a minimum level of funding before admitting you as a PhD student.

Some funding is specifically for international applicants, while other grants are reserved for international co-supervision or cotutelle projects.

The funding may cover your whole PhD, or only finance a stay in France as part of your PhD. As a general rule, these are funding programs run by governments, embassies, Campus France, or external organisations. The University of Bordeaux coordinates with certain programs (such as the China Scholarship Council, EIFFEL or Fulbright listed below).

You can also find information on the French government's dedicated page "How to finance a study project in France".

In some cases, it is up to the potential thesis supervisor to apply for funding.

CHIna scholarship council (CSC)

Every year, the Graduate Research School launches a call for projects for Chinese students seeking to do a PhD at the University of Bordeaux, in order to receive funding for a 36- or 48-month period, covering the whole PhD.

The CSC program is divided into two parts:

  • a call for proposals for thesis topics, aimed at lecturer-researchers;
  • a call for applications from Chinese students seeking to apply for one of the topics published.

On the PhD level, there are two funding options:

  • Funding for a 6- to 18-month period covering the stay in France as part of an international co-supervision or cotutelle
  • Funding for a 36-month period allowing students to do their whole PhD in France.

Hubert Curien PARTNERSHIPS

Hubert Curien Partnerships are bilateral programs helping to finance the mobility of researchers, launched by the Ministry of Europe and Foreign Affairs, and generally managed by Campus France. The partnership is a research project, set up by two research teams - one French, the other foreign - with the goal of developing technological and scientific exchanges of excellence between research laboratories in both scientific communities, and encouraging new cooperative ventures. PHCs are designed for public or private research laboratories affiliated with institutions of higher education, research organisations or companies.

Applications for funding must be submitted by lecturer-researchers.
