This dissertation consists of an investigation into contemporary mobilizations of the legal and political concept of abolition and the resulting shifts in meaning. It aims specifically to problematize and account for the relationships to law, the epistemological and theoretical presuppositions, as well as the ideological and moral underpinnings of contemporary abolitionist discourses. Drawing on the findings of this conceptual investigation, the dissertation engages in a reflection on the advisability of establishing a criterion of action for assessing the operationality of the concept of abolition from the standpoint of legal practice. This reflection is informed notably by an exploration of the methods and debates relating to practice-based research.
